Report By Adam Pendlebury
Hello and welcome to the return of the greatest literary genius since Jane
Austen was writing Mansfield Park. It’s a bigger come back than when Harold
Bishop returned to Neighbours in 1996!
I’m here to BRIEFLY take you through the pre-season and provide an account
of the most recent league fixture.
Chequer Lane 3 - 3 Cosmos
The return to action commenced against Chequer Lane at Ashton Town, scrub
that, Rose Bridge, no wait, Chequer Lane, actually we eventually kicked off in Parbold. Confused – So were we!
The match itself was an interesting affair with JP giving debuts to a number of players. Cosmos did however get off to a slow start conceding 2 early goals. One of those was a penalty. The most entertaining aspect of that was Danny Lund making himself look big in the goal. (hint of sarcasm). Just before the break Vanders neatly finished to get the cosmos pre-season up and running. That should have been the catalyst for a 2nd half fight back but within 5 minutes of the restart Chequer Lane had regained the 2 goal advantage. JP then through on a few substitutes including the charismatic Skipper in waiting, Adam Pendlebury and that seem to lift spirits. Smoked Salmon was beginning to stamp his influence on the game and linked up well with Tom to pull one back. Chris ‘nice car’ Needham was also getting involved and it was his winning of a free-kick that led to a well deserved equaliser from Jerry’s biggest enemy.
Westhoughton 2 - 1 Cosmos
Not got that much to say about this game. The biggest influence on the game was the under 5’s pitch that the teams had to play football on! Needless to say it was a scrappy affair. However, it did ensure a competitive game and special mention had to go to the young centre half pairing of Jimmy V and Danny Chadwick who were exceptional against physical forwards. The 2 goals conceded were down to lapses in concentration. The goal was a nice finish from Vanders whose season was beginning like a Virgin Pendolino!
Cosmos X 6 - 5 Cosmos X
Reporter AWOL report to follow shortly.....
Cosmos 2 - 2 Ashton Town U18's
The Mos finally took their bow on the Edge Green Street turf in this friendly against a promising Ashton Town youth team. Cosmos certainly relished the occasion as they got off to a fantastic start. From a ‘tuna’ corner Goughy scored a ‘Steve Bruce 93 v Sheff Wed type header’ to give the Cosmos a deserved lead. With Curran, Hampo and Goughy pulling the strings in midfield and Cal and Blacky attacking from wide it was only a matter of time before Cosmos scored another. It duly arrived just before the break as Dave ‘interchange’ got his goal scoring season underway with a neat finish!
JP made more changes than Sven in his prime in the 2nd half and this did disrupt proceedings as Ashton came back to earn a Desmond!
Cosmos 5 - 1 Marus Bridge
Just what the doctor ordered in the last friendly before the season got under way. Cosmos led 2-1 at the break but it could very easily have been a double figures margin. Vanders scored one from a header after great work and cross from the left by Danny Greenall, Greenall then added a 2nd with a great long range effort.
Cosmos ran riot in the 2nd half with even the usually reserved Pendlebury getting forward, floating past opposition players and almost getting on the score sheet. On the undercard, Dave was helping himself to a quicker hat trick than Robbie Fowler’s v Arsenal in 1993!
