Report by Adam (Man Marker) Pendlebury
Premier-League You’re having a Laugh
After all the ‘will they, won’t they’ and the reservations about promotion, The
Cosmos finally kicked off their season in the crème de la crème of South
Lancs football. Last season the club made trips to Bryn Hall and Legh Street,
it’s now big time football at places like Parbold Hill and Leyland Park!
After the diverse array of results against the First Division Champions of last
season, this game was difficult to predict. Cosmos went with a solid
experienced team in a 4-1-3-2 formation with Pendlebury again becoming Robbo’s shadow for the day. He was the shadow of death as he failed to have any real impact on the game. Another exemplary man-marking job!
So it was 10 v 10 and The Cosmos 10 were exceptional. Chris Lund at left-back rolled back the years putting in an accomplished performance alongside the excellent Cal, O’leary and Curran. The latter named in particular had a fantastic game and now hold's the record for the loudest grunt when stretching to head a ball. The new look midfield of Black, Gough and new signing Benno complimented each other well with the work-man-like Black allowing Gough and Benno to showcase their attacking abilities. Up front was Mr Utility Fishy who again but in a strong performance behind the energetic and skilful Needham.
The first half was tough but Cosmos never really looked in trouble and any minor issues were confidently dealt with by Mr ‘I don’t do pre-season’ who was fantastic at marshalling his defence.
The 2nd half was exceptional for The Cosmos as Benno, Gough and a live-wire substitute Walter all got their names of the score sheet. The debut goal of Benno's was very much akin to Roy Keane’s against Arsenal in 1999 with Gough supplying a great through ball. Walter’s was a cool header from debutant Nathan Evans corner with Gough making a good run into the box to finish a great move follwing a quick corner from Fishy to Benno who made a great turn and cooly squared to an oncoming Gough.
Globe were battered into submission, almost demoralised, as one of their players walked off the pitch after twisting his sock! For the remaining 15 minutes it was just like watching a Puskas inspired Hungarian team of the 1950s as the passing was exceptional. Best league performance in a long time from the mighty Mos!
All in all - an excellent start to the season.
