Report by Chris (I Can't Feel My Foot) Curran
Cosmos come of age and show real arrogance
After last weeks poor performance against possibly the worst side to ever play against The
Cosmos, there was a point to prove.
Cosmos came out on fire with a Barcelona chunk size of possession and controlling the play,
spreading the ball left to right and back again with very good link up play between defence
and midfield. Although Hawkley seemed quite compact at the back and quite hard to break
down Cosmos stuck to their guns, keeping the ball on the floor and continually making the
opposition run for the ball, knowing that soon enough their chances would come. Then half
way through the first half Chris Needham picked up the ball on the left and ran at the defence, beating two men, through on goal and with the keeper committed, knocked the ball past him and took a tumble, Penalty given! Walter Lombe steps forward with his calm swagger to take it and puts it in to the keepers top right, sending him the wrong way, 1-0 Cosmos!
KO for second half and Cosmos continue their silky football, keeping control and possession of the ball. With Hawkley continually sitting back hoping to catch the Cosmos on the break, they were once again hard to break down but after a succession of passes in the midfield Curran stepped out from centre half asking for the ball in the vacant midfield area, receiving it from Benno, fainting to shoot and rounding the last midfielder, Curran hit a 25 yard piledriver into the keepers bottom right corner, 2-0 Cosmos!
Hawkley’s game plan had to change at this point and they started to press the Cosmos, but with the quality on the pitch this played into The Cosmos hands and about 5 minutes after the second, the ball is played left to Danny Kirkham, on his (Re) Debut for The Cosmos, Kirkham hit a thunderous shot to the back post and into the far bottom corner, topping Curran’s goal, unbelievable strike, 3-0 Cosmos!
After the 3rd complacency seemed to kick in for the Cosmos when blood should have been smelt and a hopeful long ball fell to Hawkley’s striker and with the keeper committed and Kieran struggling to catch him, he managed to squeeze the ball between both and into the net, if Curran had been awake he could of stopped the ball from trickling over the line, 3-1!
Hawkley had some form of renewed hope and Cosmos seemed to be trying to knock the complacent cobwebs off themselves, manager John Pendlebury decided it was time for substitutions and what a decision that proved, with Vanders helping make the ball stick upfront and Fishy replacing a very tired Danny Kirkham, who put in a 10/10 performance after almost 2 years out of the game through injury, giving an extra lift on the left. After clearing a corner the ball fell to Vanders and he laid off to Benno, who played a very nice ball over the top of the Hawkley defence to Walter who broke the offside trap, with the keeper committed Walter lobbed him with a very cute finish, 4-1 Cosmos.
With the ball seeming to stay away from The Cosmos goal a little more and the silky football returning, Fishy picked up the ball on the left and a cross turn shot ended up wrong footing the keeper and hitting the back of the net after some AWFUL goalkeeping, 5-1 Cosmos!
Captain fantastic, Cal Jones comes off for Alex who made an instant impression with some quality crosses. Hawkley almost givien up and were playing a 4-1-5 formation with no-one tracking back for them, the game became rather open. After pressing at Hawkley’s right back position the keeper cleared and it fell to Goffi who laid it to Benno in a fine move, with the keeper not in his net Benno volleyed the ball from fully 30 yards almost breaking the back of the net, 6-1 Cosmos!
Very similar to the last goal with the Cosmos pressing at Hawkley’s right back position, Hawkley tried to clear, the ball fell into The Cosmos midfield with the ball arriving to Benno on the edge of the box, he tried a curling shot into the top corner with the keeper trying to slap the ball (Yes Slap!!!) as it flew into the net, this guy is officially the worst keeper in the world but non-the-less the final score was 7-1 which was a totally unfair scoreline for the Cosmos as it could have been 12-0.
Unsung hero of the game was Michael Black, who swept up all the rubbish in midfield and put a nice warm blanket over his defence.
