Report by Adam Pendlebury
Cosmos dramatically sealed a place in the semi-finals of the Jimmy Barnes
memorial trophy after a penalty shoot out defeat of Horwich. On an eventful
afternoon, Cosmos started poorly. It was only down to good luck and the
excellent goalkeeping of Bristow that kept the score at 1-0. However, Cosmos
Mr Decathalon beginning to get a grip on the midfield areas with the back 3
finally looking comfortable. The goal was a result of an excellent Ste flick into
the path of Needham who finished like a pre-Madrid Michael Owen.
In the second half Cosmos were in complete control, Goffi had some storming runs in the midfield and Francis Morgan Ayodélé got in some big (almost legal) tackles to unsettle the opposition. The goal came from an unlikely source though as Kieran strode forward Philippe Albert style to magnificently chip the ball over the HSM keeper. At that juncture the result looked safe but HSM, to their credit, didn’t give up and to Cosmos’ frustration they equalised through a header from a corner. I will not mention the next 5 minutes as players have complained of my bias towards a certain player so no mention of Pendlebury’s goal saving blocks and tackles that reminded me of Colin Hendry in the 1995 Blackburn, title winning team.
HSM started the brighter in extra time and scored after an uncharacteristic error from the excellent Bristow. However, Cosmos didn’t let this setback kill them off and deservedly equalised through debutant Walter.
